I arrived at the course early on Tuesday morning having, thankfully, got the one negative out of the way the final leg of the journey which involves a two and a half drive from airport to hotel.

There’s no main airport at Augusta so the vast majority of journalists arrive at the big hub in Atlanta. Forgetting just how vast the United States is, I initially presumed the drive would be a short one given that both Atlanta and Augusta are in Georgia. Wrong.

I guess it’s not exactly that far but when it’s tagged on to the end of a journey which began with a 3.30am wake up call in Manchester it’s not ideal.

That said, the drive is pretty innocuous and there’s certainly no panic inducing weaving in and out of thick traffic in downtown Atlanta. Pootling along the I20 in lanes of two, sometimes three at no more than 70mph (America has surprisingly low speed limits) is pleasant enough and, as I was travelling alone, I took the opportunity to hone some impressions (Michael Caine, Ronnie Corbett and Woody Allen the main three since you ask probably a result of watching The Trip a couple of days earlier. I also tried a Colin Montgomerie. Needs work would be fair comment).

Apart from the number of miles to Augusta,
cards against humanity packs, the sign I’d made a note of trying to see was the one advertising the Laurel and Hardy museum.

Still from the box been to the version in Ulverston Stan’s birthplace so am keen to bring up the double and see if they’ve done as good a job of celebrating Ollie. Hopefully I’ll get the chance on the drive home next Monday.

Oliver Hardy was born in Harlem, Georgia in 1892 and it did occur to my wandering mind that had they not found a suitable location, the undulations at Augusta National would have been easily steep enough to film that fantastic short when he and Stan are hauling a piano up those steps.

A lot of the journey was also spent looking for omens which would help lead me to this year’s Masters winner.

On the plane I watched ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ (7 out of 10 but no omens) and The Graduate (10 out of 10) and a definite omen given that it stars Dustin Hoffman.

I asked on Twitter a while back if anyone could think of some famous Dustins as it’s a pretty rare name. Dustin Johnson, Dustin Gee and Dustin Hoffman were the only three I could muster although some Irish friends did point me in the direction of Dustin The Turkey, their Eurovision Song Contest entry in 2008 and a regular on Irish TV since 1989.

In the end I haven’t backed Dustin Johnson (I think, like me on a long car journey, his mind wanders too much to succeed on this course which requires such mental precision) although I will be kicking myself to pieces if he goes on to win now.

It was overcast on the course this morning so I decided to put my plan to photograph Augusta National in all its splendor on hold.

Thankfully the sun arrived shortly after the announcement of the Thursday/Friday tee times so I walked the front nine. Cameras aren’t allowed on tournament days so all those snaps have to be bagged today and Wednesday (when I’ll do the back nine).

Golf wise I saw Lee Westwood drive the ball beautifully but struggle with his short game (a poor bunker shot at the par five second and two underhit chips at the short par three fourth which didn’t have enough juice to reach the green which is perched up a hill).

The first shot I saw hit today was a glorious, towering iron from Rory McIlroy which landed about 12 feet from the first flag.

I’ve backed him so that was promising although he did sound a little flat in his press conference. Normally Rory prezzers fly by as, like many Irish people, he’s very good at talking. Today though he ummed and aahed a bit and kept his head down.

There was at least one good moment when he was asked how many in the field could realistically win. After guessing ’70′ he started running down the hot off the press tee times but after giving the nod to opening pairing Tim Clark and Stewart Cink he got to Ian Woosnam and said ‘no’. Cue laughter and a slightly embarrassed Rory wriggling out something about “no disrespect to Woosie”.

Rory was followed into the press room by three time Masters champion Phil Mickelson.

As expected,
cards against humanity in store?, the left hander raved about the course and the tournament but he also said something which got my attention. Rickie Fowler is another of my picks this week and Mickelson said of the youngster: “Rickie Fowler and I were partners today and he went on a tear. He shot 30 the front nine, he eagled 13, he birdied 17 and 18, threw another one on 15, I think. Just played remarkable golf. It was fun to have him as my partner.” Save it for the real event Rickie!

Mickelson also said: “This is the best week of the year if you’re a golfer.”

As much as I love The Open, I would say that Mickelson’s statement also applies if you’re a golf fan too.

Fresh herbs add punch to iced teas

Sept. featuring free herb programs, refreshments and plant saleThat’s Kathy Burke Mihalczo’s philosophy when it comes to choosing herbs to blend with tea.

Some of her favorite herb flavors are basil, lemon verbena, spearmint and peppermint, but she’s game for experimenting with other varieties.

“I love to try different things and this is just fun to do,” she said.

At a recent culinary class, Burke Mihalczo,

cards against hummanity?, Clinton, showcased recipes for orange mint cooler, sage punch, honeydew mint basil cooler, cinnamon basil tea and rosemary lemonade. She also let the students taste a sun tea that was made with pineapple sage and lemon balm herbs.

To make sun tea “you just fill the jar with water, add the herbs and let sit in the sun eight to 10 hours,” she said. Before serving, strain the water to remove herbs and pour over ice.

Burke Mihalczo gets recipe ideas from a variety of sources, then tweaks the flavors until it satisfies her palate.

Black tea is what she uses as a base, but she urged the students to try other teas, like oolong, green and pre flavored teas like those sold by Celestial Seasonings.

“You can use a combination of herbs or just one kind to blend with them,” she said.

And once blended, the flavor of the tea can change dramatically by adding fruit juice.

For instance, the cinnamon basil tea that she made had a faint licorice flavor to it, but that totally disappeared when she added apple juice to the mixture.

“When you blend the tea with fruit juices you make an herbal fruit cooler,” she said.

Herbs added to alcohol is another way to flavor beverages.

She said to add the herb of choice to vodka, tequila, rum or brandy and let it infuse for a couple of weeks before using. However it’s important to check the mixture daily because some herbs deteriorate in alcohol quicker than others. If that happens, strain the liquid and add more herbs.

“I love using any of the lemon herbs in vodka,” she said.

Growing herbs for a living gives Burke Mihalczo a larger selection of flavors than most,
cards against humanity black cards, but it’s easy to start your own herb tea garden.

However many herbs that she used during the class are available at your local market.

Regardless of where you get them, all herbs should be washed, with damaged leaves removed, before they are used.

“They collect dust in the garden, so several rinsings, and removing bad leaves before they are used is very important,” she said.

The herb will automatically secrete its natural oils when placed in hot or boiling water, but when prepared in a cold process, as in the honeydew mint basil cooler recipe, the herb’s leaves should be bruised to help release its natural oils.

All the recipes featured today contain sugar, but she said a sugar substitute would probably work just as well. However, if the recipe calls for fruit juice,
cards againt humanity?, keep in mind the concentrated variety already contains sugar.

She also said each beverage recipe tastes good served warm or cold.

If serving cold, she recommends adding a decorative touch to the ice.

For instance, the sage punch featured an ice ring with calendula flowers and sage leaves frozen inside, while another set of ice cubes included tiny rose geranium flowers. All were edible.

Texts that Teach Literacy Resources

The Fishing Trip by Rodriguez is a wonderful wordless book that I will be adding to the list of wordless on our texts that teach list.

The book tells the story of Fox, Chicken and Crab who open the fridge to find the cupboard bare. Chicken and Crab then go off on a fishing trip to catch some food. They catch a largefish, only for a crosseagle typebirdto catch hold of the fish and drag Chicken and Crab off. They end up entangled with a nasty looking sea snake and escape back home. There a big surpriseawaits them and I laughed out loud when I turned to the last page and saw what they were having for tea.

The book would work particularly well with units of literacy in Yrs2 4 where a traditional tale is being looked at, as the story lends itself to that type of story telling. It would fit into the capturing ideas part of a teaching sequenceproviding astructure for children to retell their own story.

I was delighted to see that there were more in the series: The Chicken Thief, Fox and Hen Together,Rooster Revenge and The Treasure Thief due out at the end of this month. I am going to have to start collecting them!

My copy of The High Street arrived on Christmas Eve so I had to wait a while to settle down and enjoy it. I was not disappointed,
card against humanity. This is a book of lists (Yr1 teachers will be pleased to hear) and visits to the local shops.

This book is the antonym of cumulative I am not sure what that is! Decumulate? When I looked it up it is subtractive which makes sense. So, this book has a subtractive structure due to the fact that there is a shopping list and as Sally visits each shop she is able to cross an item off her list of 10 items.

This book would be great for anyone looking at their local environment and able to visit local shops,
cards against humaity?, draw them and study what they have to sell in them. It would also work well for Yr1 in the autumn term to go with the labels, lists and captions block of work.

Each page of the shop is folded over so that when you open it you can see the inside of the shop, both downstair and upstairs. This will involve children in detailed drawings of the shop fronts and what they imagine to be upstairs. Before they went the class had drawn up a list of animals that they wanted tosee. Instead of a version of The High Street, the children couldcreate a version called The Zoo where they cross the animals off their list once they have seen them.

If you are thinking about the things that we need to teach children prior to the Yr6 end of KS2 test, this book shows the use of the possesive apostrophe well.

I read a lot off written by children and love to find different ways of presenting this as it can lack variety on occasions.

In fact I thought I never wanted to see another set if for a cup of tea until Ifound Alice Melvin wonderful little book Fancy a Brew? a guide to the perfect cuppa

What I love most about this book is that it is about paper folding, and illustrating (that just about everything about the book).

The book is made out of out of 2 pieces of paper folded in the middle with a cardboard cover sewn on. The front and back cover open out to show what is needed to make the perfect cuppa, a table where you can fill in where and when you had a perfect cuppa and then at the end a tea bag stapled in to make a cuppa with.

The is uncomplicated and the illustrations are beautiful. Similar illustrations could be created with a black felt pen and one other colour.

This is just a fantastic way to present your . The book reminds me of Paul Johnson book Literacy Through the Book Arts which is all about paper folding and pop ups as a way to stimulate and present children work,
cards against himanity.

I am waiting for a copy of her latest book The High Street to arrive. It looks like it might be a contender for our texts that teach .

Followers of this blog will know only to well my penchant for a good book to use to support literacy teaching,
cards against humanity sale.

This is the story of Henry and whathe wanted more thananything else in the whole wide world. A perfect pet, of course, in the form of a dog.

There is however a duck who wants, more than anything else in the world, a friend. With a little bit of disguise by the duck, the two get together and have great fun until the disguise falls off.

The book is told inthree shortchapters which is unusual for a picture book. The first chapter tells about Henry and the second chapter about the duck. The third chapter tells what happens when they get together. There are opportunities for creating wanted posters, adverts, labelled diagrams and non chronological reports. It makes a wonderful text for children to innovate upon, about their own perfect pet.

Thesecond sentence in the book is wonderful and is one that is definitely worth learning and remembering and using for children to create their own version.

What Henry wantedmore than anything else in the whole wide world, more than chips, more than a cowboy costume, more than an all expenses paid trip to the moon, more, even, than world peace itself, was a dog.
